Independence Hall will be under going
restoration efforts to preserve the tower
for future generations and you can help
William Strickland in 1828 reconstructed Independence Hall Tower when the original tower had to be removed due to structural instability. Strickland’s tower is one of America’s earliest examples of colonial revival architecture and it is desperately in need of repair. The tower is undergoing major structural deterioration due to moisture seeping into the wooden boards of the tower. Rigorous preservation efforts will need to be employed as Independence Hall Tower is a critical element of the Independence Hall World Heritage site as both a landmark and focus of the park’s interpretive themes
While under construction, Independence National Historical Park and the Friends of Independence have elected to raise a decorative scrim to cover the scaffolding around Independence Hall Tower. The decorative scrim will cover all four sides of the tower and part of the main building. On the north, west and east sides of the tower, an architectural rendering of the tower will be shown on the scrim to allow visitors and locals an un-interrupted view of Independence Hall. On the south side of the scrim, the rendering will depict the inside of the tower, giving onlookers a peek at the architectural complexities that reside within the four brick walls. The scrim will not only serve as a safety and protection function but will allow for the visitor’s experiences to be unchanged during the fourteen month construction period. Due to the large size needed to cover all the scaffolding, the Friends have agreed to raise $100,000 or the total cost of the Decorative Scrim but we need your help.
Donations for the support of the decorative scrim that will be in place from January 2010 to March 2011 are currently being taken. By donating to this project you are enabling millions of visitors to happily experience the true beauty of Independence Hall.
For all our generous donors there are great benefits to be had (click here) in addition to a 100% tax donation and the knowledge that you helped support the first scrim ever placed on Independence Hall Tower.
